Hello,
My H8000FW has started crashing lately… the meters all become pinned and it freezes.
Now on reboot, it displays OS version 1.240. I had 5.3 installed.
It won't move any further on boot up, because the presets are from a newer OS version.
I tried reinstalling the updated OS v5.3. However, the H8000FW will not accept the upgrade.
Here is the error I receive when attempting the update:
CPU Illegal Instruction
Program: DAF118
Program: 000000
reboot won't occur at this point.
Any suggestions? Preferably performable from home… can't be
without my TIDE over the christmas season : (
thanks,
Nathaniel

HI Nathaniel
1.240 is the bootrom version, not the OS. You still have V5.3 on it.
You can try a full reinitialization pressing & holding the 8 key as soon as the display shows "H8000FW". Then press the YES key on the next screen. Warning: this will erase all your presets…hopefully you have a backup.
please try

Cool. Thanks.
That got me into the system. I've got to go route the audio again to test, but it seems to have solved the issue.
Any thoughts as to what caused this? Is there a battery that needs changing?
thanks-

I'm not sure the battery needs to be changed.
A small button-type battery is mounted internally and powers the H8000FW's memory
when the power is off. This should last about five years before it needs to be changed,
longer if the H8000FW is left powered up much of the time. The number of hours for
which the unit has been operating, powered and unpowered, can be found under
SETUP/service/information.
This battery should be replaced by a qualified technician only since it must be replaced
when the H8000FW is powered up in order to preserve the internal memory contents.
Contact your Eventide Service Center to have this battery replaced.Use the box and see if anything weird happens in the next days….

my unit is older than yours but has been on less than yours. There is no fixed rule here, just recurring problems that may point to the need of replacing the battery.

Ok… lasted for about 3 hours.
Then crashed with this error:

Hi Entrainer
is the unit locked?
you should continue using it and see if this error comes up again/frequently.
Is the unit under clean/conditioned power?

I've been using it off and on. It continues to crash.
Here's the most recent error:
CPU Found an Illegal Error
Instruction D83D92
It does freeze. The meters all go pinned (red)
all channels.
Yes, I am using clean, conditioned power.

It's reverted back to 1.240 again.
I think I'm going to have to send it in : (

Hi Entrainer
it's impossible the unit reverts to 1.240. That's bootrom version, not OS.
My suggestions are these:
-power the unit off, remove the power cable and after 10 minutes open the top cover, locate the U106 chip. It's a big square chip slightly oof_right the display, close to the Boot Rom chip. It's inserted in a square socket with 4 silicone drops on the corners. Press on it to make sure it's correctly seated, all around the perimeter and on the 4 corners.
-change the internal battey too, if you haven't already.
-try also a complete factory reinitialization (boot w/8key). This will erase your own presets, so back them up first.
These measures should help. If they don't. you'll need to contact support@eventide.com.

Thanks.
>-change the internal battey too, if you haven't already.
Can I do this here then? Will it just require installing the
presets/OS again… or do I need to change it powered up?
Is it a standard, off the shelf watch battery?

The User Manual advices to change it while the unit is on. This is ***ONLY*** adviced as a procedure for expert technicians, not for the normal user. So it would be better and safer to do it while the unit is off and the mains cable disconnected. I believe you'll only loose your user stored info like presets, routings, setups, maps. These can be backed up and restored.
I have no full info on the battery. I believe is a a CR/BR2032 but you may want to contact support@eventide.com for precise info on this.

Thanks IDeangelis.
I was going to try what you recommended. I just fired up the unit one last time…
now I have a "white screen of death". It's just a frozen white screen on power up. No text, no booting.
I think I'm going to call in this time…

Entrainer
check the U106 chip as described in my previous posts. That fixes these problems in many cases.
Please let me know.

OK!
I opened the unit and pushed down on the chip to ensure it was seated.
The tide BOOTS!
Can you give me a hint as to where the battery is? I see several small
circular things that I don't want to force, in case they are small caps instead
of batteries. If I know the whereabouts, it'd be easy to change.
best,
Nathaniel
