I've got the H8000FW. Is there a barberpole phaser preset?
I think it's created by feeding an out back into a frequency
shifter and mixing the fedback signal with the wet signal.
It's similar to a sherpard's tone, in that the illusion is given
of always rising or falling.

The barberpole phaser is definitely more complex than that. It requires an LFO capable of outputting a number of different waveforms and offset their phases of different degrees amounts..and probably more.
There is no such preset in the H8000. Something that may sound "similar" could be preset 3517 One Way Phaser.
If a complete knowledge on the topic is available, an attempt to create such type of phaser could be done. it will be a large algorithm using several LFOs and math functions to offset phases….
all the best

p.s. The one using a mixed signal from a freq. shifter can easily be created in Vsig.

Could this be made backwards compatible with the Orville? 🙂

it should be done first…..and things may depend on the used modules.
You could try building it on Orville. it has the necessary modules, provided you know what it is first.

Here's one example of what it sounds like, in case anyone is interested.
IDeangelis- You are right, there are two lfos on the modular
I'm looking at, one 0 degrees, and one 90 degrees phase shifted.

yep
that's the infinite rising (or falling) phaser.
Have you tried the preset mentioned in my reply?

Going to go fire it up ASAP!

A nice paper of same author: http://www.matrixsynth.com/blog/media/misc/bode/History%20of%20electronic%20sound%20modification.pdf

I would be interested in this patch too…!

A simple way of creating the type of effect described in the Bode patent:
– Sum input signals to mono
– Run through 6 or more 1st order allpass filters in series, with the coefficients set to a pleasant sounding area, usually fairly close to the unit circle.
– The series allpasses feed a phase-differencing based frequency shifter. FIR based frequency shifters can work, but don't have the built-in phase wiggles of the IIR based frequency shifters. The "classic" frequency shifter feedback effects are based around 12th order IIR Hilbert networks, where there is a considerable amount of phase lag.
– One of the outputs of the phase shifter is scaled and fed back into the input of the allpass filters.
– The system is mixed with the original input signal as needed.
If you replace the series allpass filters with a short delay line, you can get a "barberpole flanging" sound.
It seems like it would be fairly easy to wire such a system up in Vsig. I've built similar networks before in Csound, Reaktor, and MAX/MSP, with my latest realization (ValhallaFreqEcho) done in C++.

offtopic, but I have used ValhallaFreqEcho and its very close to "FreqShift W/Delay"
