Hi, i’d like to replicate some boss bf3 flanger setting in my h90, the boss have 5 knob manual, res, rate, depth and mode knob.
How are the same variable in h90 flanger? i think the boss is on negative mode and maybe a sine shape waveform but i’m not shure about it.
some advice?
thank you

The trusty ol’ flanger from the ModFactor still has a lot of life in it. I’d start by setting Intensity & Depth to midpoint, all the secondary mod controls off, or minimum, then switch through the various Types and Shapes. Probably Sine or Triangle for the latter.
The new Instant Flanger algorithm is really great. You can target just the high frequencies. It is a bit more complicated to set up, though. I don’t have any Boss pedals, so I’m not familiar with their newer modes. Sounds to me like more feedback / regeneration in one, and a gated / panning effect in the other.
There are several flanger-based Programs up at PatchStorage that might give you a head start.

thank you brock, can you tell me what “delay offset” actually do in the flanger algo?

Think of it like a Manual control in an MXR, or Filter Matrix in a Mistress. It is the base delay time in a flanger.
The LFO sweeps around; centered on this short delay time (only milliseconds). Or, you can eliminate the LFO influence, and use it ‘manually’ to sweep through the small range of delay.
I believe it was also called Modify O/P (or similar) in some variation on the theme. The Instant Flanger has a unique feature, where the delay time is controlled by the oscillator, envelope follower, manual, or any combination of that.
If your have an expression pedal, try mapping that to Delay Offset. Flanging under foot control.

thank you brock, i’m working on the flanger and the istant flanger and and I’m getting to the results I needed.
after researching around as regards the boss bf 2, the knob manual is equivalent to the delay offset of the h9-90 specifically clockwise it is equivalent to the delay offsett 0ms, “manual” counterclockwise instead corresponds to the maximum delay offsett of the h9-90. In the boss Bf3 however it is exactly the opposite i.e. clockwise of the manual is 100% of the h9-90 delayoffset.
the “standard” setting on the boss is the negative waveform
the boss RES is the intensity in the H9-90
depth the same
RATE is obviously SPEEDhaving said that, I think that the guys from eventide should enhance the documentation of the algorithms in order to make everything more appreciated, not all guitarists or musicians have the desire or ability to research and study every single parameter of an algorithm to understand exactly what goes to influence.
a more reasoned documentation would make everything more usable and faster to use.
Also because I’ve seen a lot of demo videos of the h90 and honestly they’re all done by ear in a very superficial way (many limit themselves to using the presets but you also need to know how to set them), what I’m noticing is that on a social level the h90 seems to play at 30% of the real possibilities
the sounds that the various youtubers make are sterile and do not give justice to the excellent quality of the product.
this is constructive criticism and encourage the guys at eventide to improve the documentation.

Sounds to me like you’re getting it down. Whenever I’m trying to emulate some classic device, I tend to study the original parameter documentation (if I can find it), then fine-tune by ear. Break the ‘rules’, or expand on the parameter ranges, as needed.
Yes, the manual / delay time concept is counterintuitive: shorter delay times = higher frequencies. You can get flanging with any delay algo that’s short enough, and has modulation capability (ex. Mod Delay). One reason the Rose modulation sounds so damn good – fractional delay times, down to microseconds. Each manufacturer / design team is going to approach that fact a little differently.
One little tidbit about the O.G. Flanger algorithm. You may be jumping on Negative first, but in Thru-0 mode, the left output is positive flanging, with the right being negative flanging. With the Instant Flanger, you may also want to explore the negative Feedback option. I think the documentation for this vintage rack effect is done very well, but it doesn’t mention that nugget of info:

I know the thing about the tzf, I read it on this forum many years ago and I think it’s absurd that it’s not mentioned in the official manual, don’t you think?

Yeah, maybe so. But I’m also the kind of guy who’d like to see every single parameter & range limit in a detailed list. For reference at a glance, like paper manuals & MIDI Implementation Lists used to be (yet not Roland-esque).
With limited resources at hand nowadays, I accept that you have to draw the line somewhere. And I don’t believe updates to legacy algorithm documentation would be high on that to-do list.
