The release notes for v5.3 were updated in August. A new note was added that was not in the original release notes. The new item is "H8000, H8000A users with ADAT cards should NOT install this release."
What 's the story with that change?
I have an H8000A. I don't use any of the digital I/O. How can I find out if I have an ADAT card?

Just to clarify, I thought that all H8000s had ADAT support – so I'm not sure if standard ADAT support implies an ADAT card or not. My H8000A does have two ADAT connections in back. If standard ADAT support is done via an ADAT card, can it be removed by end users?

You are right – all H8000's ( and H8000A's ) have an ADAT board. On the H8000FW, this board is replaced by a FireWire board, which also supports ADAT.
This card can be removed by an end-user, but this configuration will not have been tested by us, so it may or may not do what you expect.
There is little reason for an H8000 owner to run 5.3, as almost all of its changes involve FireWire issues.

Thanks. The reason I'm looking at v5.3 is because it was recommended (last December) in this post http://forum.eventide.com/cs/forums/p/5164/21762.aspx#21762 . Does v5.3 have any changes in MIDI handling that might make a difference there?

I think he suggested 5.3 cos in general we like people to use the latest version. It does not have any specific MIDI fixes.
It sounds like you could have a hardware problems, but cables and configuration issues are more likely explanations.
