Hi All,
I know this topic has been discussed in the past, I’ve been lurking the last couple of years hoping an easy solution would turn up. I would like to upgrade from one H9 to two or three but this issue has kept me from doing so.
When I perform live I have the pedal active(ON) 100% of the time. I never use the tap or other options. All I need to be able to do is click up and down through presets.
The factory option for this(clicking up and hitting the button to switch to clicking down) has burned me at shows, forcing me to stop and adjust settings. I set up a TRS footswitch but that takes up a lot of space and hasn’t been 100% reliable.(I can’t imagine setting up 3 separate TRS switches for multiple H9s) I’ve looked into the Ox9 pedal but that takes up room and the layout of the switches isn’t great for live playing.
Sooooo, a few questions:
- Would it be possible to ask the Eventide folks for a software fix/feature?(If there are enough people who feel this is an issue..) Something as simple as a “Performance mode” toggle in Settings(via the app) that would lock “up on right switch” and “down on left switch.”
- Is there a small Midi footswitch that can send preset up/down CC messages to multiple H9 pedals? (A separate up and down switch for each pedal and reliable for stage?)
- Has anyone tried rewiring the two switches on the body to the TRS jack input internally? I know that is voiding warranties and a bit of a kludge but might give me what I’m looking for functionally.
In general I love the sound of the pedal, it is annoying such a small issue can keep me from using it fully. As an engineer I’ve used the rack units for over 20 years and have been happy with the support and quality Eventide has always provided.

Based on your description, I think the most simple and room saving solution is to use Ox9 on the first H9 to increment/decrement and load presets, and use short MIDI cables to connect to 2nd and 3rd H9s. The 1st H9 can send MIDI messages to also increment/decrement 2nd and 3rd H9s when you press the footswitches on Ox9.

IN RE MIDI CONTROLLERS:
I use a Disaster Area DMC-3XL. But there are tons. It is 4.8″ x 2.6″ x 1.4″
You could control 3 H9s with this if you wanted. but in banks for each pedal.. or you can call PC messages on all of them simultaneously for coordinated switches.
IN RE REWIRING:
This would be trivial, I think. The switches are panel mounted.. so you could clip them easily. Then you would have to wire onto the inside of the jack… on the right side of the attached pic,,,but it is outside of the audio signal chain.. so pretty low-risk, IMO.
It would take an hour and 2cents worth of wire.. and would be a killer mod. You should do it!

Have you tried using the Disaster Area DMC for switching through presets? Does it lag the way the TRS switch does?

Thanks for the info.. this might be the easiest solution for the moment.

thanks for the reply.
That is an interesting solution, I didn’t realize you could transmit midi from the footswitches. I do need independent preset switching though,(sorry I wasn’t clear in my post) so I would be looking at a Disaster Area DMC-6 or similiar.. I assume I can transmit CC to change presets on different channels to control 3 pedals individually on one midi chain?
Can I step through the presets quickly using midi? I find that using the footswitch to step up/down, I have to wait about a second before I can click again to the next preset or it won’t switch, which means it takes a long time to move up 10 presets.

in CC mode, my DMC with flip though presets just as fast as I can hit that button!
Though I really want you to hard wire your H9 buttons into your TRS jack. It sounds like an awesome project.
YOU COULD EVEN PRESERVE THE TUNER FUNCTIONALITY.

heck.. if you were willing to sacrifice a MIDI port. you could wire in a SWITCH that flipped you from normal footswitches.. to BankUP/BankDOWN/CallTuner.

It would be better to do the rewiring in software…
It’s certainly feasible, it’s only a matter of will!
