Is it possible to set up a loop on the H90 so that the end of the loop ‘overlaps’ the beginning? I’m imagining that the loop would have a kind of attack time, and a release time that would decay over the beginning of the loop.
I didn’t notice a parameter for this, but wondering if there is some way to do it. If not – feature request!

This is an interesting idea. Another approach would be a setting that would make the STOP button become a FADE OUT so a loop can be fading while a a new idea is developed before hitting record again. This would be a more controlled overdub, or just a way to eloquently end a looping interlude.

If you switch to a different program and the spillover time is long enough, this will accomplish the same thing. The loop will continue to play but fade according to the time specified.

Ah, yes I understand the spillover method, which would work as a ‘release’ on the loop – but what I am talking about is using a release time while staying in the same loop – basically an adjustable crossfade time.
Obviously easier if the loop length is not using the whole buffer, then you could just use some of the recording after the loop point – the app Loopy Pro seems to deal with this issue with a an ‘intro’ and ‘tail’ section – but it could also just play backwards if it hits the end of the buffer, for example, or another part of the selected length.
Use case is most likely for longer ‘drone’ material.

Ahh never thought of that. So without doing a MIDI program change from external controller , what is the easiest way to go to another identical looper program seamlessly? My first thought would be to copy my current Looper program to an adjacent one with the App and use the foot switches ,correct ?

Yes, that is an interesting idea. It triggered a few thoughts. All will probably involve occupying both Preset slots (using two algorithms).
A few examples Looper into Ducked Delay. Or into UltraTap, for significantly longer ‘crossfade’ times. Into DynaVerb (Omnipressor), for shorter A/R envelopes. Even Looper in Series / Parallel to Looper. No doubt it could be switchable live for applying the effect selectively.

Ah yes, all very interesting solutions! In my mind the ducked delay makes the most sense – would still be cool to be able to set it in a loop, especially for an ‘attack’ time, but combination of a delay and a manual volume fade at the beginning could work well.

Ducked Delay would probably be the easiest starting point. You’ll be limited to a 3 second crossfade, if that works for you. I see any downstream delay as being a sync’ed phrase extension to the Looper. It may be a matter of simply HotSwitch-ing the Ducked Delay Mix between 0 & 100, for bringing the effect in & out (assuming Looper -> Ducked Delay in Series).
The Slow Gear attack … yes, that will require some other tactics or algorithms. But if you’re mainly interested in crossfaded drones, I can think of quite a few other algorithms that might fit the bill, with less of a limitation on the overall durations.

What I had in mind were the reverb, delay, and ‘special’ algorithms featuring a Freeze or Infinite target value. There are a lot of them, but I’d start with a reverb algo like Blackhole (Inv Gravity), DynaVerb, Wormhole, or even Reverse Reverb – something with an initial ‘bloom’. The base Program should have a healthy amount of decay, so it fades out smoothly after disengaging Freeze / INF.
The same application of Feedback or Repeat in the delays, similar to the Looper Decay. My favorite technique of late is using the ‘real’ Freeze in one of the newest Pitch or Synth algorithms. Often with two instances; each one featuring a separate Freeze parameter exposed.
I find one main advantage to be further manipulation & shifts in pitch of the Freeze signal. With AUX – HotSwitches and EXP pedal mappings, while still frozen. Clever programming to initiate some ‘fade-in’, and the same kind of techniques as above for smoothing the ‘fade-outs’.

Ah, yes that makes a lot of sense – just using the freeze almost as if it where the ‘sustain’ of an ADSR in a way. That could definitely get me started.
I’m very curious to see what is possible if/when RNBO comes to the H90 – perhaps I’ll have a go at making something like this.
