I recently acquired an H90 to replace my H9 Max and Strymon Volante on my pedalboard, which I’m controlling with a Morningstar MC6 MKII. In my previous setup, I had all my overdrives in the H9’s loop (modulation before overdrives, delays after) with the Volante connected at the end. The MC6 managed the Volante’s delays and the H9’s modulation and pitch effects based on the songs (e.g., Black Keys’ “Lonely Boy” intro with a whammy drop and octave effect for the riff, along with slapback from the Volante).
Now, I’ve reconfigured my board to use the H90, placing my overdrives in ‘Insert 1.’ Here are my questions:
1. I never had issues using the overdrives when the H9 was off or presets weren’t active. I’ve set the H90 bypass to AB only, allowing the overdrives to work when the H90 is off. Do I need to apply this setting to every single preset for the overdrives to work when the H90 isn’t used, or is there a more efficient method than Insert 1/AB only to replicate my H9 Max setup?
2. Since the H90 is now handling all delay functions from the Volante, I plan to create specific presets for delays (like slap, 1/4, and 1/8 notes). When I need delays with modulation or pitch, is it more effective to combine these in a single program and toggle the effects on and off as needed?
3. Will the MC6 be able to turn on a program with a specifc preset turned on (if there are two normally on)?
4. IS there any different settings to change how the tuner looks, or is there just the one visbility setting (ie no strobe , lighting etc).
Thanks for your help! Alex

The Bypass mode settings are global, so they will work across all Programs. What is not global is the creation of an insert. You must choose the position of the insert on a Program basis.

If you like delays like the Volante you’ll appreciate our Head Space algorithm.

It’s really up to you and what your requirements are during a performance. You’ll find there are several self contained algorithms that might meet your criteria with these combinations of effects – SpaceTime, Mod Delay, H910/H949, MicroPitch – but of course with H90 you may combine two powerful algorithms together. Using the new Perform mode you have the freedom to toggle individual presets/algorithms on or off during a song, or you may even map those functions to your MIDI controller. Some people take the easy route, and just create Programs with one effect bypassed and just recall it via MIDI. With spillover, transitions are seamless. It all depends on the level of control you require.
3. Will the MC6 be able to turn on a program with a specific preset turned on (if there are two normally on)?
Yes, this is possible using MIDI commands, a PC followed by a CC command to turn a preset off. You’ll need to map your own CC# to the “A act/byp(m)” command (or B act/byp (m)) in the H90’s MIDI system menu and send that with value = 0 for Off, value=127 for On.
Or again, take the easy way out and create another Program with one preset bypassed and just recall that.
This video discusses MIDI-Global Control for assigning CC to preset functions: https://youtu.be/tfd3wQHzxcA?t=1026

There are no settings for adjusting how the tuner looks on the display at the moment. What were you looking for?

Thank you very much for your reply joecozzi. I have everything working as I want, except that I can not toggle the program off with the MC6. I have used number CC#110 as the Prog Act/Byp, but for the life of me I can’t get it to turn off!? I am unsure how well you know Morningstar Editor, but I have attached a screenshot of the instructions I am giving it?
Any help would be again appreciated! Alex

Hello,
Your MC6 screenshot looks correct for position 1 to load/activate the program or preset and position 2 to deactivate it.
What is your H90 MIDI mapping? You will need to use the “Active/Bypass(M)” mapping for this to work correctly (not “Active/Bypass”).
See the tip from the user manual here for further explanation: https://cdn.eventideaudio.com/manuals/h90/1.9.7/content/appendix/global.html

Thanks tbskoglund for the reply. I swapped to momentary active/ bypass instead of active/bypass lastnight but still does not work turning the program off?

You’re welcome.
Just for simplicity, lets try a simpler approach with your MIDI controller to confirm how things are working:
- Turn toggle mode OFF
- Assign a footswitch with CC 111 value 0 to footswitch to Program Active/Bypass (M)
- Assign another footswitch with CC 111 value 127 to footswitch to Program Active/Bypass (M)
- Does each footswitch work in this scenario for sending the active or bypassed state?

I just can’t for the life of me get the same button to do it!

Ok, thanks for the information.
What happens if you remove the PC message? Are you then able to get the toggle to work?
The latest firmware for the H90 has some issues where a PC+CC message may not work properly. If you email support@eventideaudio.com I can help you install a previous version of H90 software that may resolve the issue.
But just for some additional information, what are you trying to accomplish with the setup here?
If you send a PC+CC to load and activate a program, you will be in toggle state 2 which will then allow you to bypass the program, correct? But then if you want to activate the program again, you will first be reloading and then activating it again (because you are sending the PC+CC message for the first toggle state).
You can configure all of your H90 programs to load in the correct active/bypasses states, but I understand that some users want to control the active/bypass states with a CC message, so I’m just trying to get a better idea of your setup.
