  Would be convenient if there was a way for the H9000 to sync its tempo based on MIDI clock messages received over USB.

  This is already possible. Set Tempo Mode to “MIDI” and configure your DAW to output MIDI clock over USB.
  
  You can also use Emote as a plug-in, set Tempo Mode to “DAW”, and the H9000 will follow the tempo of your DAW Session. https://cdn.eventideaudio.com/manuals/h9000/2.2.11/content/emote/plugin.html#daw-tempo-sync
