Just got an Eventide Space. Some tips setting up for guitar use?

Hi. I finally picked up a Space. My modulation board will be a Timefactor and a Space. I haven’t really had time to dig into it properly yet, but it has more than I will ever need I think. I will be using it live with guitars.

I will be using both pedals in front of the amp, and not in the effects loop. At least that is the way I have always done it. Would you recommend I put them both through the loop? I noticed when playing with it straight into the amp, there seemed to be a slight bit of latency, so I messed around with the mix controls to try and get it right. Again, I have to read the manual!

If I am going straight into the amp, should I set it to buffered or not? (This applies to both the Space and Timefactor) Or if I go into the effects loop with both, should I be changing anything in the settings?

I also have an Ernie Ball Jr volume pedal, which I use as a volume pedal. I assume I will need to use a TRS cable to expression input to use it as an expression pedal?

The answer to this is a matter of preference and it would be worth experimenting. I prefer to have all time-based effects like delay and reverb in the loop because the result sounds more open, more studio-like than running effects through the front of the amp. How clean do you run your amp? If you use your amp’s preamp section for any type of overdrive or saturation, I would say definitely run the effects in the loop. If not, go straight in. Think of the preamp as adding character to both your tone and the delay trails and reverb tails, but this would not happen if the effects are in the loop. Try both, record the result and decide what is your sound.

It is true that some presets need to be adjusted to taste. Because of this it may seem like latency when it’s just the effect of the reverb’s mix, pre delay, or inverse type that could be misconstrued as latency. I would also make sure your pedal has the latest firmware update to make sure things are optimal. When the pedal is bypassed in DSP mode, there should be ZERO latency perceived.

Any bypass mode will work for both the front or loop of an amp. If you want delays and reverbs to trail off when bypassed, use DSP+FX. If you are concerned about your tone being processed when the effect is bypassed, then choose Relay, which makes a hardwired connection form input to output. With TimeFactor and Space, I use DSP+FX.

Be aware that there are two versions of the Ernie Ball VP Jr, the 6180 250K and the 6181 25K. The best one to use with Eventide pedals is the 6181 25K version because the potentiometer is rated for our pedals’ inputs. TRS is the way to go with this model.

Pro tip: you may use the H9 Control application to explore more presets, quickly edit sounds, and create customer preset lists.

Wow. Thanks for the detailed reply. Well, based on your feedback, I think I will set both pedals to DSP+FX. I run the amp pretty clean, so will experiment going in front of and in the loop. All my dirt comes from pedals. It’s a solid state amp. I need to check my volume pedal and see which one I have! It is in my practice space.

I will also make sure I have the firmware updated. That’s probably the easiest place to start.

One of the awesome algorithms in Space is Blackhole. In fact, with a few minor changes, Blackhole is in Space, the H9, the H90, and it’s own dot9 pedal. That’s relevant because Joe Cozzi (who answered you above) recorded an hour-long, two-part demo/tutorial video for the dot9 Blackhole pedal and Part 1 of that demo/tutorial mostly applies to all the pedals. Joe’s tutorials helped me with the H9 and H90 so much that I can’t recommend them enough.
