Hi. What FX in the H7600 would help replicate Gilmour's lead guitar tone in solos like Comfortably Numb? I have the raw distortion tone pretty close with a Mesa TriAxis, but I need to nail the flanger + rotator effects. I believe he used an Electric Mistress flanger, and either a UniVibe or actual Leslie cabs for the spacy rotational tone.
Help appreciated! -

Try tweaking the MIDI Racks. They have all the tools to make that sound possible.

Thanks Prot. I am a avid reader of gilmourish.com, but my question was really how to in fact go from the effects they describe on that site to the H7600. I do own analog pedals such as the Electirc Mistress, the Big Muff, and other pedals that David uses. However, a lot of his pedals have been tweaked by Pete Cornish and others to make them less noisy. To be honest, the main reason I bought the H7600 was to replace these anlog pedals with a better digital platform that could be programmed to do that. Although I have no doubts that the H7600 can do it, there is first a lot of fishing in the preset library, although it seems like the Midi VirtRacks is a good starting point. I am closing in on the tone, and the noise factor is better indeed, but I now have to learn how to equate the terms on the analog pedals to the more technical (and correct) terms that a DSP enginner, and Vsigfile developer, tends to program. I found some good links on Harmony-Central that describes the parameters of standard effects such as flanger, chorus and others. I am now learning in full depth how these function, so I can understand how the H7600 presets operate after I download them into Vsigfile. It's interesting actually.
So thanks for the info, but as I said, the task at hand now is to "translate" analog pedal parameters into what VirtRacks and the H7600 understands.

I see your point.
However I relay doubt that someone can give us the precise script for the tone that we like.
Its quite impossible as each of us uses different guitar, amp, cabinet, room and?fingers 😉 so even if we replicate FX factor it will still not be the same. But personally for me, the most important factor to approach masters DG 80/90?s tone was to get start with EMG SA pickups. I have also other starts but only the one with EMG SA has Gilmour inside ;).
Just my 2 cents.

Hi j
you don't really need any DSP engineering/programming to get the FX you want.
Slow chorus and/or some phasing can easily get that Gilmour tone. Short delay time with slow modulation and some feedback…not too much…short to become a flanger.
Use your ears!

Agree on the use your ears, but having said that … my Strat is indeed an EMG pickups and electronics, and I have the Big Muff / Electric Mistress / Boss CS-2 / MXR Phase 90 and so on analog pedals, and I still can't nail that tone. I get close, so close, but alas so far away…
I can get a really nice tone, which I sort of consider my base lead tone now, but I really love this sort of rotational, spacey additional effects that he has, and that none of these pedals can reproduce. Gilmour uses these small Yamaha rotating speakers that they call "doppolas", which might have a lot to do with it. I was hoping there might be some H7600 "spatial" presets that would do that, and that I could combine to my pedals via the SwitchBlade.
Anyways, I'm now spending more time creating tones that I like, that are MINE.
But admittedly, nailing this tone was / still is a holy grail search for some of us somehow. -

2 frequency shifters at moderate rate (0.8 > 1.5 Hz), in "mirror" settings (+/-), with some feedback to add a little swoosh (use it at your taste- whith high settings you get a special flange flavor). This will give you that liquid spatial panning! Try at full wet or at 50/50 dry/wet. I prefer full wet. It's very close to Gilmour thing. Try putting the fx at the very end of the fx chain for more dramatic results…or experiment with placement at your taste.
Tech Note:
try copying and pasting the code above in Vsig. It's the text format. Should work. I have tried here.
Let me know….

OK, just got an hour to try this. The text file works just fine thanks a lot. Now I know what a negative feedback value means. I like this, it does get closer, although more like 50-50 dry/wet mix.
I am now integrating this code into a larger patch. I like Midi VirtRacks #3 for the trem + delay + reverb (I turned off chorus and phaser). I'll add the new algo you gave me (I named it "Floyd DeAngelis") at the end of Racks#3.
I'm using my floor Boss CS-2 compressor, otherwise, 100% Eventide! I have a good TriAxis setting that comes close to the muff + Hiwatt tone, but less noise and nice tube behavior.
I'll circulate the patch once its finished. -

italo,
I tried combining your "Floyd" algorithm at the end of VirtRacks#3, but it doesn't compile. I get an error on the Vsigfile window that says:
Loader: invalid short immediate: 0x166 at 0x1
loadpass: error for codegen 1E (freqshift)
Some error occured while trying
to load compiled program.
Program not loaded.Meanwhile, the H7600 says: "ERROR This system does not contain a module needed for this program"
Here is the code below. It's sort of dirty, because I did not clean up ther menus (not that good with them yet), I simply added your dual freqShift at +/- 1.4Hz at the end with hard coded feedback and mix levels into the two mixers.

Are you able to get the 7600 to load the original algorithm I sent you?
If the answer is yes, then all modules are ok for thr H7600.
Here I have tried to paste my sigfile at the end of MVR#3 and get the same errors as you get. It may well be a too large sigfile after the added fx, as suggested in my previous email.
Cut something you don't use…or use both DSPs for 2 MVR in series.
Can't load your pasted code…too much.

The "invalid short immediate" error you mention is an internal error that is not normally seen.
In this case, you can probably fix it by moving the two FREQSHIFT modules towards the start of the file.

How can I move them to the beginning of the file and still have the effect be applied after all the effects of rack#3?
I know how to use VSigfile in text mode, but I don't know how to do that? -
April 3, 2008 at 6:43 pm #128402J20056Participant
Italo,
I could definitely load your module just fine, like it quite a bit indeed.
Does the H7600 have two processors, and if yes, how to use both in series? -
April 3, 2008 at 6:54 pm #128403IDeangelisMember
Oooops!
Sorry, I had the impression you owned an H8000.
The H7600 has a single DSP.

In text mode, highlight input 2 then click and move each module, releasing just after that input.

I'm going to take out the reverb and the chorus. Is it fair to assume that the DSP power is used whether or not you use one of the VirtRacks algorithms? There are some ProTools plugins like Guitar Rig that do not use the CPU if you turn them off (without removing them from the Insert channel).
I think I'm going to assemble a module carefully by only taking the pieces that I need. It'll be a good learning curve anyways. -
April 4, 2008 at 6:37 am #128410IDeangelisMember
Have you treid moving those few modules (ring mod) at the beginning of the algorithm? That may work. I think that removing both chorus and reverb is too much. You shouldn't really need that.
DSP work in realtime. It's different from computers. If an algorithm is compiled, the unused fx still take resources as they exist. Same thing on a computer: the algorithm slot allocation has a fixed size for the plugin. If you don't use it, the CPU won't work…but if you use it and some parts of it are not, they still take up space that could hve been used for a better/larger version of the used fx.

You guys f*****g rule!
I moved the two FREQSHIFT right below the header, and it compiled just fine.
More importantly, the tone is now really really close!!!
This is good, this is really good. Thanks guys. I'm going to redesign the user interface to remove unwanted module controls and control wet-dry nicely, then I'll share the algorithm.
