I just tried to launch the update utility to get the new TF software and the update utility won't launch, it immediately quits and never opens. I'm running Mac OS X 10.5.8.
I can send the crash log if you need it.

I'm not a TF owner but with the good experience I've had with my PF, I sure am interested. In fact I'd like to follow what's going on with both the TF and MF. So, my question is: why do I have to be a registered TF owner to see what's new? (release notes) I can understand why that applies to getting the update itself, but… feature/fix list?

TimeFactor Update Release Notes
More Presets
TimeFactor now supports up to 50 Banks/100 Presets.
This update includes killer new factory presets.
Improved Vintage Delay
The Bits, Filter, and Feedback controls have been improved for a more authentic
sound.
Improved Tape Echo
The Filter and Feedback controls have been improved for a more authentic
sound.
A Saturation control has replaced the Hiss control on the Xnob.
Expression Pedal Improvements
Expression Pedal Programming Activation:
Expression Pedal programming is now activated only when the Expression Pedal
is at the heel or toe position.
Shorter Timeout:
The Pedal Programming Timeout has been reduced to 2 seconds. This means
that when you move the Expression Pedal to heel or toe position, TimeFactor will
allow Expression Pedal programming for 2 seconds and then change to normal
operation.
Pedal Programming Lock:
You can now optionally disable live Expression Pedal programming. (See
System Menu Updates.)
Parameter Fine-Tuning
The Encoder can now be used to fine-tune all knob parameters if turned within 2
seconds of turning any knob.
Bank Select via Encoder Knob
In Bank Mode, the Encoder can now be used to select banks in either direction if
turned within 2 seconds of pressing a bank change footswitch.
System Menu Updates
[MIDI] – General Improvements have been made to MIDI operation, including
these new MIDI Functions:
[RCV CTL] – There are new choices for Receive Control to alter the unit’s
BYPASS setting:
ACT – Make the unit ACTive, i.e. not bypassed.
TOG – TOGgle the between bypass and active.
[RCV MAP] – BYPASS via Program Change
As well as using MIDI program change to load a preset, now it can also be
programmed to directly control the unit’s BYPASS setting. In the Receive
Map menu you can now select one of the following:
BYP – BYPass the unit
ACT – Make the unit ACTive, i.e. not bypassed.
TOG – TOGgle the between bypass and active.
[CLK IN] – MIDI Input Clock Enable
Turn Encoder to set MIDI Clock Receive ON or OFF. If ON, MIDI Clock is
used as a Tempo source.
[CLK OUT] – MIDI Output Clock Enable
Turn Encoder to set MIDI Clock Transmit ON or OFF. If ON,
TimeFactor can now be used as a MIDI Clock source.
[CLK FLT] – MIDI Clock Filter Enable
Turn Encoder to set MIDI Clock Filtering ON or OFF. If ON,
TimeFactor can be used with an unstable MIDI Clock source.
[UTILITY] – New Utility Function:
[PDLOCK] – "Lock" Expression Pedal settings
When PDLOCK is set to ON, Expression Pedal programming is disabled
and all Expression Pedal settings are locked. Default is OFF (unlocked).
Miscellaneous Fixes
MIDI Clock timing has been improved.
The accuracy of using MIDI CC to control TAP has been improved.
A received real time MIDI signal (e.g. MIDIclock) no longer terminates any sysex
message also being received.
When a RPT ON or RPT OFF message is displayed, the Encoder knob no longer
gets locked out.
It no longer takes two switch presses to turn-off Infinite Repeat after changing
from Play mode to Bank mode.
Dumping presets over USB no longer results in BAD LOAD messages.
There was an issue when assigning an Aux Switch to tip=FS1, ring=FS2,
t+r=FS3. From Bank Mode, loading a preset that was saved as Looper and then
loading a different preset that was not Looper resulted in Tap Tempo from an aux
switch to be ignored until you switched to Play Mode and then back to Bank
Mode again.
The displays for Tempo, Fdbk, Dly, are now consistent among all three Factor
series Stompboxes.
Overall Wet/Dry levels are now more consistent
In System/MIDI/XMT CC when you change the MIDI CC numbers from factory
defaults, the settings are no longer lost after power cycle.
If an Aux Switch is assigned to control both TAP and STP, the settings are no
longer lost after power cycle.
When using an Aux Switch assigned to TAP, a single tap of the Aux Switch now
displays the current tempo like a single tap on the on-board TAP footswitch does.
When assigning an Aux Switch to P/B, the switch no longer decrements the Bank
number with every other press.

Alan,
The update is fabulous, thank you.
As the OP of the 'Disappointing' thread I would like to wave the white flag and the olive branch and let others know that the wait was worth it. I've spent the best part of three hours just enjoying the new patches. Thanks again. On to the Modfactor now.. 🙂

Thanks for the update, I had some good time enjoying some of the new presets with this improved sound on tape Echo and Analog delay. But, is it normal that the spillover don't function anymore, whatever bypass type engaged??? When I disabled the preset, spillover don't continue!

I still cannot figure out how to use the sysex program on my mac to backup presets. Last time I thought it worked but then the presets would never get back onto the unit, or weren't actually saved. This time I'd really like to not lose my information. Can anyone please step by step help me with this?

OK! I just tried installing it with mac os 10.6 Leopard several times and it didn't work! I then grabbed my laptop with 10.5 and it worked great! Not sure if Leopard has anything to do with it but this solved my problem!….

Hi
10.5.x = Leopard
10.6.x = Snow Leopard
It may well be possible the update software is not yet compatible with 10.6. Using 10.5.x should help, as you have already found out.

Hi,
I updated with 10.6.1 and it worked.
I did have to restart the Updater a couple of times and start the TimeFactor in update mode.
but it worked eventually.

I did eventually get the updater to work but not in Leopard (10.5.8) I had to go to another computer in my house that has Tiger 10.4.11 installed where the updater opened up fine and worked without a hitch. It would never open at all on Leopard, it spun for a sec then immediately quit and some error message came up saying it had to unexpectedly close and did I want to report this to Apple.
Not sure what was going on but at least I'm updated now!

I get a "Microsoft Visual C++" error when trying to download the new updates. I seem to recall having to download the last updates separately and manually select them. Will I need to do this again and if so could I get a reminder of how to do it and directions to where might I access the file?
Many thanks.

i would really like to know if the looper section is enhanced, there's nothing about it in the release notes. Does it work without glitches now ? Is it possible to use the looper and have delay on the sound like the DL4 ?
thanks

No major looper changes this release – it will come later – no date yet.

I've performed the update and the issue I'm having is that the 1:1 preset will not adjust any parameters. The delay times will only show 0 and then 3000ms when I move the dial and no sound will adjust. I have to turn off the unit a couple of times and then move to another preset and then back. Any one else experience this "lock out"?
Thanks!

I had this exact problem as well, on a tape delay setting. After the update, my tape delay preset sounded real squirrely and was displaying odd values (wow in the hundreds instead of something between 1-10?). I adjusted the values to sound good, hit save.. got the weird display of dots, the message "bad save" and the preset was lost and replaced with the factory preset at that location.
To get around this issue, I had to power the pedal off, then back on, then created a new tape delay preset, then it saved fine.. I tried many other things, but this was the only sequence that worked.
Kudos to eventide, the updated delays sound phenomenal. It also seems the bypass dropout is gone, at least on the presets I have created.

same here. A good old fashion reboot and it now works. however it feels it is not as stable as the previous version. Some savings are not saved (eg tempo)
Amazing presets, very responsive
Another glitch: Anoalog delay
Much better than previous one but bits 5 to 8 are useless as this result in sound off, it also appears than the very last repeats get too dirty and volume increase

Guys, just went to update my TF (XP)..
When the updater software FINALLy found my TF it started to update…
It went through the erase process then died at 8% in the writing process.
I was told to restart my TF and try again but now my TF is blitzed ;( All lights come on and flash every 2 secs or so.. No writing… Have a bad feeling the OS has been wiped and only a small bit of it replaced by the write process?
Anyone else have a similar problem? Im close to cryin guys!!
Help me out here if possible please!!!
Thanks,

I too am finding it impossible to update. I've tried both on my PC (Vista) and MAC (10.6) and both crash when attempting to download the 2.4 update. At first I thought it was because it was 10.6, but then .. well it could be vista too 😛

Okay.. How I got around the problems on both PC and MAC (they both crashed) was I found the path of the file in the Windows error report then downloaded it, and then just did update from file.
It's writing atm 🙂

is there some way to enable all 50 presets? i downloaded the beta and still only get the first 10 banks…
Yes – its in the manual – UTILITY/BANKS.
Or, better yet, re-initialize the unit (always recommended after an upgrade) – see "Restoring Factory System Settings" in the manual.

I have one more issue to add to the list.
In 1:1 and 1:2 I have a sublte 1/4 note and a less sublte .8 note Vintage Delay. When I switch from 1:1 to 1:2, there is a short but very obvious blast of static. It's loud enough to be heard over the guitar.
In case in helps, I run it in front of the amp.

What I should have said is when I make an adjustment to the speed knob in ModDelay and try to store it it doesn't save it! When I go to another preset and come back it's going back to the original setting!

After I select the Update, it asks me to enter username and password. After I enter those, I "agree" to the Terms and Cond., then click "OK" for the Update desription. After I click the "OK" is when I get the error window. Today though, I click Ignore, and then it tells me that my username or password is no good?

I've successfully installed this. However, when I try to set both Low and High banks to 50, I can't change banks anymore and its just stuck at 50. I've initialized and cleared set-up to no avail. When I leave it at it's default setting of L:1 and H:50, it works but I can't utilize the lower banks to store my own presets.
Has anyone experienced this?

Is something wrong with modulation in this new update? I performed the update and it seems like the modulation doesn't work properly any more. For instance, on these two presets there is a very noticeable rotating speaker and chorus type sound in previous software versions, but in the new version I can't hear the modulation at all:
2:2 Bridge of Sighs [DigitalDelay]
7:2 Every Lead You Fake [ModDelay]I have tried recreating the sound by tweaking the speed and depth but at best I can dial in a faint chorus type tone. This issue doesn't seem to be limited to the presets. I wrote down settings for a couple presets I had stored before updating, and I also dumped the presets. If I tried to recreate the patches by manually entering the values or restoring from backup, the patch just doesn't get the rich modulation sound any more.
Are these known issues? The only report I have seen so far is regarding saving a modulation setting and not with the missing sound.

October 5, 2009 at 3:47 pm #119158starfishMemberIs it necessary to perform a clear setup on boot going from 2.0.3 to 2.4.0? The release notes only mention that a clear setup is necessary when reverting back to 2.0.3 but I don't know… The modulation present in previous versions on the TF firmware is either missing or changed to make it much less rich on the chorus. This is a pretty big deal and hopefully a known issue.

Hi, I have noticed a change to the modulation also….. Also the Vintage Delay now sounds awful ! Its seems to distort in an ugly way. Anyone else having this problem ? Previous to this update the Vintage Delay sounded great – in the vein of a Roland SDD3000, Korg Sdd 2000, 3000, but now the repeats are to obviously "treated" to sound naturally vintage. Are you guys (Eventide) chasing an analog repeat or a vintage digital delay sounding repeat ?? I would suggest go with the digital sounding repeat, as we can use the filter and bit reduction to make it more analog sounding if needed. cheers
-

hmmm, I guess this a subjective issue as most people I have seen commenting, in fact all comments have been VERY pleased with the new vintage delay sounds.
they sound more authentic as far as the vintage tone, but this may not be for everyone.
there are a lot of posts over on the "gear page" forums and we all are loving the vintage settings.
I don't know, but it sounds like you prefer the more digital take on vintage delay rather than the darker sounds of real vintage delays, judging by the list of delays you mention.

I also think the modulation patches sound different but I can't put my finger on what it is and since I'm not going to reinstall the older software version I can't A/B them to compare so I'm relying on memory. I haven't had a lot of time lately to tweak the patches to see if I can get them to sound more like I remember.
I like the new vintage delays but to be honest I didn't dislike the old ones and overall I like the new presets, some really good sounds in there.
I know the Time Factor is a delay unit but it would be nice to get a really great chorus sound for those times when I need it. I have limited real estate on my pedal board and I don't use modulation sounds enough to justify buying a ModFactor for this reason. Back in the day I used rack mounted delay units for chorus and was always able to tweak them to get a decent chorus sound but I haven't been able to get the TF to do this so if it's possible I'd like the Mod Delay tweaked a bit more so it can get a good chorus.
I don't know if this is possible but maybe Eventide could come out with a MultiFactor where it has some of the great delays, modulation and harmonized/pitch sounds available for those of us with limited pedal board room that want to have a lot of the common sounds available to use on gigs kinda like a "greatest hits" of the other Factors. I know it wouldn't be as deep as the individual factors but for it's purpose it wouldn't need to be. The hardest thing might be figuring out which of the sounds from the 3 Factors you would put on it.

Eventide guys – I cant save the speed settings in mod delay and others. Serious bug that makes this version not usable for a giging guitarist.
Also – the modulation is not sounding the same in general. Not as rich/thick/warm sounding. I could in 2.03 duplicate a retro sonic analog chorus peda ( that emulated an old roland ce-1 )l to the point i sold it on ebay…. the new version sounds less rich. Could it be that the filter knob doesn't get deep or warm as in earlier software versions.
I had a great analog chorus sound in 2.03 ( i started in bridge of sighs and tweaked ) cant get that sound now…
I'm reverting back to the previous version until these bugs are fixed – I cant gig with this.
That being said the tape mode is LUSH AND SPECTACULAR !! So i look forward to the issues being resolved and I'll give it a whirl when this update is final.
Thanks for listening

On the whole, I'm absolutely stocked with this update. I'm not sure if it's able to do more things, but I'm hearing things I haven't heard it do before – phaseflange like effect, but I'm particually stoked with the vibrato.
And no, I may not be able to save presets correctly.. But I like where it's heading.
Though, if there's one improvement I could ask for it would be for an auto volume function for the ducked delays. Maybe set it so that when it is 100% dry (so essentially bypass) it goes onto auto.
Anyway, I look forward to what's next!
-
October 7, 2009 at 3:47 pm #119191disseverMember
What does general improvements to system reponse mean? Has the gap when going from bypass/effect been improved? This is one of my biggest issues with the pedal.
-
October 7, 2009 at 4:09 pm #130316
You probably need to judge for yourself, but
1) MF especially is noticeably snappier
2) You may be referring to a bug where there was a glitch when coming out of DSP bypass – this is now fixed.

I'll probably be told I've got my ears stuffed with cotton wool for this and too long standing in front of a loud amp stack may have gotten the better of me, but I can't seem to hear what the saturation control on the tape delay is actually doing to the sound.
The vintage delay is sounding really nice now as are the crazy oscillation noises and I'm definitely noticing a speedier response time when changing patches. Nice one Eventide!

My update experience not good.
I did the update and it crashed at 62%
I got a failure message and it told me to reboot and try again.
So I did and then it couldn't find the TF.
So I downloaded the latest update utility program and installed it.
From the read me text I learned this:
"Power the device off, then hold down the center foot pedal while you turn the power on. Hold the center foot pedal down until the display shows UPDATE. Release the center foot pedal. The device is ready to be updated."
Now I have my TF in update mode manually
Making sure TF is on first I then start the update utiliy
This time it finds the TF
Download went smooth and so did the update.
No Problems.
I started playing with the new presets
I started at about 16.1
I already new what the old presets sounded like
Impressed with the news sounds I ventured to the end.
I started over with 1.1 and started listening to the old prestes to see if there was any difference.
Well, some of them don't work at all
Some of them, the ones with band delay, just whistle
5.2 chorus doesn't work at all.
If you want a detailed list I'll go through them all again.
In my opinion this program has some serious issues.
But I'm going to do the update again just to see what happens.
I'll be Back.
I'm here to help if I can.

I did the 2nd update and still no change.
Some presets not working others whistling.
The cure!
First I tried the Clear Function (Hold Encoder Knob and Right Switch down while powering up)
Still no Change.
So I then Initialized the TF ( Holding Encoder Knob and Middle Foot Switch while powering up)
Now all the presets seem to work and the whistling stopped.
42.1 and 42.2 sound noisy but, maybe that's what you were going for.
At this point I think I could gig with this delay pedal.
I believe I do hear some of the other things I've heard others commenting on like the bridge of sighs and Saturation knob.
I think I will go for a third update install making sure the unit has been Initialized, cleared.
I might go back to the previous update first and then back so I can really A/B them.
Damn I need two of these things.
Apologies to Eventide if needed. Seems that the update isn't as buggy as first believed.
I'll be Back

Glad that things are looking up !!
In general we recommend that you clear setup or initialize after an update, although people are reluctant to do this…
In this case, there are a number of changes to the algorithms which mean that any saved user presets will act differently (maybe whistle and hum). Factory presets have been retuned.

I been sitting here for the last couple of days going back and forth on the software versions.
First off the version 2.0.3 [3]
Particulary preset 2.2 sounds much fuller than the new updated version.
Reason:
Some of the user settings have been changed.
You can find the original settings here:
http://www.eventide.com/~/media/Files/Audio%20Support/TimeFactor/Everyone/TFPresets.ashx
You may noticed and I heard others complain that it wasn't saving the settings correctly.
What I discovered was actually it was saving the settings correctly but the readout on the speed knob was incorrect.
With catchup on when I turn the speed knob the arrow points to the right but shows the value of 1.00Hz wich would be to the left.
When I turn the knob to the right however when it reaches the saved value of 4.98Hz the arrow goes away and I'm able to change the value again proving the saved value of 4.98Hz was indeed saved although the display showed the value of 1.00Hz to be the saved value.
The settings were saved correctly however.
I also noticed that preset 8.2 has been changed too.
Probably more are changed also I haven't checked all of them yet.
I suspect that 5.2 has also been modified.
The speed knob is the culprit on 5.2 also
incorrect readings but saved values are intact.
Now Version 2.4.0[1]
Tape mode definitely sounds better richer and fuller.
The new presets are pretty cool.
It's going to take a lot of TIME to check them out.
Some new documentation on all the software versions would be nice.
You know like you have on the first version.
The speed knob is showing incorrect settings on some presets
specifically 5.2 check it out
with catchup on
see if it it has a 0.xx value but has a right arrow
mine does
oh well
too much for one day
break time
I'll be back
In conclusion:
The old standby presets we have come to trust and love have been changed in the new Beta Software.
Switch them back if you perfer using the chart or your back up system.
Don't trust the readings on the readout.
There seems to be some bugs in that area.
Regards
Joey Ray

I think I'm just echoing some of what's been said above, but updaters should beware that some funny stuff goes down with the mod settings. I was able to run the update with no problems, but when I reinstalled some of my personal presets, several sounded funny. The settings for the top row knobs were fine, but the bottom row needed some tweaking. Fortunately I had written down the specs for all of my old settings, so some quick adjustments fixed things.
So, the lesson is, write down your settings before running the update.

I tell you what, right now it feels like I've got a $400 piece of gear I'm hanging onto for future use. And that's not a good feeling. I don't want to spend time building presets right now because I would rather build them around the updated software, especially if the tape sounds are improved – but the beta has obviously got some issues..so, I'm in limbo. I find myself spending my limbo time looking at other delay units 🙂
I think the TF has a lot of promise…I just hope it is delivered someday.
Oh…and just in case it needed to be said again…..PRESET NAMING!!!!

Sorry but – if you've got a unit that can store up to 100 presets, and one of its selling points is that it can be used in the studio, as well as on a pedalboard (line level, stereo outs) then yes….naming presets becomes pretty important.

I think the point being made here is that, while preset names would
be an excellent addition, Eventide clearly has bigger and more
pressing issues to deal with, such as the consistency and integrity of the preset sounds themselves… -
November 5, 2009 at 10:11 pm #130535damienl64Member
Exactly, I'd love to get the names but in the first time it is important to get the sounds right!!!
-
November 5, 2009 at 10:13 pm #130536cacibiParticipant
Yes and I think the counterpoint being made here is that basic usability, at least for some, is equally important. Of course it's ultimately an audio device – but it has to be functional in the practical situations it was built for, I don't think preset naming is a lower priority just because it's not directly related to the audio output of the device. The sound might be great – but if I can't find them, it doesn't do me a whole lot of good.
And honestly – I'm not sure people would be so hung up on it, if that rather large LED readout wasn't constantly crying out at you every time you look down at the pedal saying, "I wish I could tell you what sound I am, but you'll just have to remember what 5:2 does! Or is it 5:3 that does that?!"
-

At the risk of sounding pedantic…
This thread is chock full of posts from people whose units have crashed while updated,
who can't seem to save rates along with their presets and who are
frustrated by a MIDI sync function that doesn't actually stay in sync. You are proposing that Eventide implement a new feature which would undoubtedly make the unit more user-friendly whereas I am suggesting that they first repair the functions which do not work (or have stopped working) as advertised.Dave
